"Followers" are the people who have subscribed to your tweets. These people will see your tweets in their timeline, without having to do any searches. This is your audience.
Similarly, your "following" is the the list of people who you have subscribed to. These are the users whose tweets show up on your timeline, when you log in to Twitter.
